What you are signing up for
The word 'management' in the title matters. Resource Management in Health and Social Care and Assessment Processes in Health and Social Care Settings, both 20 credits, are written for someone responsible for a service rather than a shift. Around them sit Promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Social Care, Communication in the Caring Professions and Principles of Health and Safety for Health Professions, and the whole is held together by Professional Development and Academic Writing Skills, which OTHM has placed in this programme in place of the generic writing unit.
It is taken mostly by care coordinators, senior support workers, deputy managers and team leaders in domiciliary, residential and supported living services, and the assignment briefs suit their settings. You will audit a policy in your own workplace, review a communication breakdown and propose a resource plan for a real service. This diploma does not replace a Level 3 or Level 5 in adult care for registration purposes, and it is not a nursing or social work qualification; it is the academic first year of a health and social care management route, 120 credits at Level 4.
The six units
- Promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Social Care20 credits
- Professional Development and Academic Writing Skills20 credits
- Communication in the Caring Professions20 credits
- Principles of Health and Safety for Health Professions20 credits
- Assessment Processes in Health and Social Care Settings20 credits
- Resource Management in Health and Social Care20 credits
Unit titles and credit values are taken from the OTHM qualification specification. The order in which LSPM teaches them is set by LSPM and confirmed at enrolment.
Professional Development and Academic Writing Skills opens the programme. The equality, communication and health and safety units follow as the practice core, and the assessment and resource management units close it as the management pair.
Entry requirements
OTHM sets the entry requirements for this qualification and LSPM, as the approved centre, applies them when it assesses your application. As published by the awarding body:
- Relevant Level 3 Diploma qualification or equivalent qualification
- GCE Advanced level in 2 subjects or equivalent qualification
- Mature learners (over 21) with relevant management experience (learners must check with the delivery centre regarding this experience prior to registering for the programme)
Entry is by Level 3 diploma, by two A levels, or by the mature route that OTHM opens to over-21s with experience. For this programme, a Level 3 in adult care plus shift-leading or coordinating responsibility is the profile we see most often and that LSPM has been glad to accept.
How you are assessed
One written assignment per unit, usually a report on your own service with recommendations. There are no exams or observed practice. Formative feedback before submission is LSPM's arrangement to confirm.
Where it leads, stated carefully
Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care Management from OTHM, the second-year equivalent on the same route.
Second-year entry to a health and social care or health studies degree, if the university accepts the diploma for advanced standing.
Deputy manager or registered manager preparation, where the Level 5 in leadership for adult care usually follows.
We do not name partner universities on this page. If and when LSPM shows us a written progression agreement for this diploma, it will be listed here with the date it was signed.
Who it suits
Likely to get a lot from it
- Senior support workers and team leaders who have been running rotas and supervision without a management qualification.
- Care coordinators in home care agencies who want to move towards deputy or registered manager.
- People from other sectors moving into care management who need the academic grounding.
Better served by something else
- Anyone who wants a clinical or nursing qualification; this is management and practice theory, not clinical training.
- Front-line staff who do not yet want responsibility for a service; the Qualifi Health and Social Care diploma is more practice-oriented.
- Those who need a qualification recognised by the regulator for registered manager status; that is a separate leadership diploma.
Asked about this programme
Is this the qualification I need to become a registered manager?
No. Regulators expect a leadership and management diploma in adult care, typically at Level 5. This programme gives you the academic foundation and a strong start on the theory, but it is not that qualification.
Why is there an academic writing unit in a care programme?
Because most people who start it have not written an assessed essay in years, and the other five units are assessed through reports. It is the unit that gets people through.
How does it differ from the Qualifi Health and Social Care diploma?
This OTHM version has two explicitly managerial units and one on health and safety. The Qualifi diploma is more about policy, sociology and reflective practice, with a single people-management unit. Choose based on whether you want to lead a service or understand the sector.
