What you are signing up for
Where its OTHM cousin splits the year between accounting and general business, this Qualifi diploma keeps the discipline in view from the first unit to the last. Accounting in a Business Context opens it, Financial Accounting and Management Accounting form the technical core, and Leadership and Management in Accounting closes it by asking how a finance team is actually run. The economics and accounting methods units in between supply the theory that the technical work leans on.
In our experience this suits applicants who have already decided on finance and are impatient with anything that is not. The assignments are more numerical than on most Level 4 programmes, though each still asks for a written interpretation, because a set of figures nobody can explain is not yet accounting. Qualifi does not publish individual unit credit values for this diploma in the way OTHM does; the whole carries 120 credits, and you should treat the six units as roughly equal in weight. As with every accounting diploma at this level, it confers no membership of a professional body and no automatic exam exemptions.
The six units
- Accounting in a Business Context
- Economics for Business Mathematical
- Accounting Methods
- Financial Accounting
- Management Accounting
- Leadership and Management in Accounting
Unit titles and credit values are taken from the Qualifi qualification specification. The order in which LSPM teaches them is set by LSPM and confirmed at enrolment.
Accounting in a Business Context and the economics unit come first, then the methods and financial accounting units, then management accounting, with the leadership unit last: that is the order the specification implies and the one LSPM has used, though LSPM confirms the sequence for each intake. Financial and management accounting sit side by side so the differences between them are obvious.
Entry requirements
Qualifi sets the entry requirements for this qualification and LSPM, as the approved centre, applies them when it assesses your application. As published by the awarding body:
- Approved Centres are responsible for reviewing and making decisions as to the applicant’s ability to complete the learning programme successfully and meet the demands of the qualification. The initial assessment by the centre, will need to consider the support that is readily available or can be made available to meet individual learner needs as appropriate.
- The qualification has been designed to be accessible without artificial barriers that restrict access, for this qualification applicants must be aged 16 or over.
- In the case of applicants whose first language is not English, then IELTS 6 (or equivalent) is required. International qualifications will be checked for appropriate enrolment to UK higher education postgraduate programmes where applicable. The applicants are normally required to produce two supporting references, at least one of which should preferably be academic.
Qualifi asks centres to judge each applicant on their ability to complete the programme, and the age floor is 16. In practice LSPM looks for a Level 3 qualification or a finance-related job, and for applicants whose first language is not English, IELTS 6 or equivalent.
How you are assessed
Written assignments for each unit, several of which include calculations or prepared statements alongside the commentary. Nothing is examined under time pressure. Whether feedback on a draft comes before the marked submission is LSPM's practice to confirm; ask before you enrol.
Where it leads, stated carefully
Level 5 Diploma in Accounting and Finance from Qualifi, the second stage of the same route.
An application for advanced standing on an accounting and finance degree; each university decides whether and how much credit to recognise.
Finance assistant and trainee management accountant posts where a Level 4 is the qualification the job advert asks for.
We do not name partner universities on this page. If and when LSPM shows us a written progression agreement for this diploma, it will be listed here with the date it was signed.
Who it suits
Likely to get a lot from it
- Finance administrators who want the theory behind the month-end routine they already run.
- School leavers with a Level 3 in business or maths who are sure about accounting and want to move quickly.
- People returning to work after a break who need a current, recognised finance qualification.
Better served by something else
- Learners who want breadth across marketing, operations and people; the OTHM Accounting and Business diploma has more of that.
- Anyone expecting the diploma to count towards ACCA, CIMA or AAT membership; it does not.
- Those who cannot commit to steady weekly study; the technical units build on each other and are hard to catch up on.
Asked about this programme
Why are there no credit values against the units?
Qualifi publishes the total of 120 credits for the diploma and our data does not break it down per unit. Ask us for the current specification if you want the detail; we will send it.
Is management accounting very different from financial accounting?
Yes, and that is why both are units. Financial accounting reports what happened to outsiders; management accounting builds budgets and costings for people inside the business. You need both to be useful in a finance team.
Should I choose this or the OTHM Accounting and Business diploma?
Choose this one if you are certain about finance and want more accounting per credit. Choose the OTHM diploma if you want general business units alongside, or if you value its published 20-credit unit structure.
